Chartered March 1, 1958 as the Epsilon Rho Sigma Chapter, Rock Hill Alumnae has its roots in the selfless efforts of its 16 charter members who resided in the South Carolina counties of Chester, Lancaster and York. Like Delta’s 22 founders, these phenomenal women set out to make Delta’s influence felt in their local community. The chapter’s early goals were to 1) create a closer bond among sorors within the chapter, 2) engage in activities with other Delta chapters in the area and region, 3) cooperate with the projects of the national body and to initiate many of the projects locally, and 4) encourage local women to seek membership in the chapter.
Upon the chapter’s 20th anniversary in 1978, two milestones were achieved — purchase of the chapter’s sorority house, called the Life Development Center, and assistance in the establishment of the Xi Beta Chapter at Winthrop College, now Winthrop University.
Through the years Rock Hill Alumnae has sponsored and coordinated programs reaching all age groups and fostering educational and cultural enrichment in Rock Hill and the surrounding area. Its positive influence continues to impact the community through such annual projects as the annual Jabberwock Scholarship pageant, May Week Salute to Future Leaders Program, School America, Delta Academy, Financial Fortitude workshops, the Garrick-Ramseur Memorial scholarship awards, International Day of Service and a host of other social action and public service programs supporting Delta’s national Five-Point Program Thrust: Educational Development, Economic Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Political Awareness and Involvement, and Physical and Mental Health.
