Physical and Mental Health
As an organization of predominantly African American women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is uniquely positioned to impact not only the well-being of its membership, but also the families and communities we serve.
Cervical Cancer Prevention
Are there tests that can prevent cervical cancer or find it early?
There are two tests that can either help prevent cervical cancer or find it early:
• Depending on your age, your doctor may recommend you have a Pap
test, or an HPV test, or both tests together.
• The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancers, cell changes, on the
cervix that can be treated, so that cervical cancer is prevented. The Pap
test also can find cervical cancer early, when treatment is most effective.
The Pap test only screens for cervical cancer. It does not screen for any
other gynecologic cancer.
• The HPV test looks for HPV—the virus that can cause precancerous
cell changes and cervical cancer.
Mental Health is YOUR Health
The Rock Hill Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta celebrated our illustrious sorority’s Founders Day by disseminating information about mental health resources in our area. As we are focused on sisterhood, scholarship, and service, we chose to spend the day in service.
- Did you know that according to Mental Health America, 16% of Black and African American people in the United States reported having a mental illness in 2018. This number equals 7 million or more people than the populations of Chicago, Houston, and Philadelphia.
- Black and African American people living below the poverty line are twice as likely to report severe psychological distress than those living over two times the poverty level.
- Adult Blacks and African Americans are more likely to have feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness than adult whites.
- Black people and African Americans are less likely than white people to die from suicide at all ages. However, Black and African American teenagers are more likely to attempt suicide than White teenagers (9.8 percent v. 6.1 percent).
The Rock Hill Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. wants our community to be aware of mental health resources.
